CHRISTMAS CANDLELIGHT TOUR December 4-5

People Engaged in Preservation, LaPorte’s not-for-profit historic preservation group, is pleased to announce the return of its annual Christmas Candlelight Tour, to be held on Saturday December 4th, from 4 to 8 pm, and Sunday December 5th, from 1 to 5 pm.

Notably, this year’s tour will feature two mansions, the Arbor Hill Inn (the former W. A. Jones estate), and the Rumely Mansion on Rose Street. Also featured will be three additional private homes, Steve and Bobbie Moyer, 1201 Jefferson Ave.; Scott and Tina Pierce, 302 ”F” Street; and James and Karen Burden, 1805 Michigan Ave.. In addition to the houses, this year, for the first time ever, both the 1872 Swedish-built Carmel Chapel, and Trinity Lutheran Church on Michigan Avenue (which is celebrating its 85th year), will be on the tour.

All seven sites will be open for leisurely self-guided touring, and will be beautifully decorated for the Christmas season. Docents from PEP will tell about the features and architecture of each home, and owners love to share the “story” of their house. Each ticket includes a tour of all 7 sites, a printed program documenting the history of each site, live musical entertainment, refreshments at Trinity Lutheran Church and Carmel Chapel…..plus a “Victorian” sleigh or carriage ride through the heart of LaPorte’s renowned “Avenues” historic district.

Tour Chairperson, Clara Lawrence, observed, “We were truly overwhelmed by the expressed regret of the community, when, after being held for 13 consecutive years, the tour was cancelled last year. With that in mind, we are most gratified in our ability to bring back this wonderful LaPorte tradition that many so eagerly look forward to. Our members, volunteers, decorators, and homeowners are excited, and thoroughly committed to putting on a great event for everyone this year. Of course, it would not be possible without the generosity of this year’s homeowners and others, who, in the spirit of the season, are graciously willing to open their homes to our tour-goers,” Lawrence concluded.

Advance tickets will cost $15, with ticket outlets to be announced at a date in the near future, or, send your check for $15 per person, payable to People Engaged in Preservation, P.O. Box 853, LaPorte, IN 46352. Day of tour tickets will cost $18, and be available, during tour hours only, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 907 Michigan Avenue.

As a special opportunity, for those purchasing tour tickets by mail who wish to join our organization, PEP is offering a reduced rate of membership, $10 per person, which will carry the membership through the rest of 2010, and the entire calendar year 2011. Those wishing to pursue this option should include $25 per person with their advance ticket purchase, for each membership sought.
